Backup is the product. Not a gallery. Not a social layer. Not a place to perform the holiday. The files you already have, kept at the size the camera wrote, so a dead phone is boring.
You install the iPhone app. You allow photos once. After that the Home Screen widget is the whole interface — all backed up, or paused. We built it so you would stop opening backup software.
What leaves the phone
Everything in the library the app is allowed to see. Stills. Live Photos. Bursts you kept. Screenshots. Screen recordings. 4K. Slow‑mo. Cinematic. ProRAW. ProRes. If Photos has the original, we send the original.
We do not transcode to save space. A smaller cousin is not a backup. HEIC stays HEIC. 4K stays 4K. The date it was taken stays the date it was taken.
When it runs
On Wi‑Fi. While the phone is cool. It waits if you are on cellular, if the phone is hot, if Low Power is on, if the battery is low and unplugged. Night, on charge, is when the long videos should move. That is manners, not a setting you babysit.
Glance at the widget if you worry. You should not open us every week. If you do, we failed.
Two copies
The iPhone is one copy. PhotoCocoon is the other — an independent original, not a thumbnail in someone else’s feed. iCloud can exist. You can use both. We are the attic that is not tied to the same account as the phone.
iCloud Optimize
If iCloud has already evicted the original from the handset, we cannot send a ghost. Keep originals on this iPhone if you want a real second copy. We wrote the walkthrough in Keep originals on this iPhone.
What you will not do
No picking albums. No dragging folders. No sitting with a progress bar on hotel Wi‑Fi in another country. Defaults are quiet. The engine is native iOS — Safari cannot see a camera roll, and a website cannot finish a 4K file after you close the tab.
